Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is the procedure used to save a tooth whose inner pulp — the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels — has become infected or irreversibly inflamed, often as a result of deep decay, a crack or trauma. Left untreated this can cause pain, abscess formation and ultimately loss of the tooth. During treatment the dentist removes the diseased pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the narrow canals inside the roots, disinfects them and then fills and seals them to prevent reinfection.
