Type
MRI Scan
Duration
45 min
A magnetic resonance imaging scan of the spine that gives detailed views of the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and nerve roots without ionising radiation. ST Medical scans the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine individually or in combination, with the option to add the sacroiliac joints or contrast enhancement. It is frequently used to investigate back or neck pain, sciatica, suspected disc problems and nerve-root compression, and the images are interpreted by a radiologist.
Spinal MRI is one of the most useful ways to look at the back because it shows the soft tissues — the discs, the spinal cord and the nerve roots — as well as the bony vertebrae, all without using X-rays. At ST Medical Clinic the spine is imaged by region: the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back) or lumbar (lower back) segment can be scanned on its own, or two or three segments combined when symptoms are more widespread. The sacroiliac joints can be added, which is often helpful when inflammatory back conditions are being considered, and a contrast-enhanced study is available when the clinical question calls for it. The examination is carried out by a radiographer and reported by a radiologist, with an optional CD copy of the images. During the scan you lie on your back on the table that slides into the scanner, and it is important to stay still so the pictures are sharp; depending on how many segments are imaged the appointment typically lasts around thirty to forty-five minutes. The scanner is noisy and ear protection is supplied. As with any MRI, the powerful magnet means staff will check for pacemakers, certain implants, metal fragments and pregnancy before you go in. A referral describing your symptoms helps the radiology team decide how many segments to image and whether contrast or sacroiliac-joint views would add value, so the scan answers your clinician's question as fully as possible.
