Type
MRI Scan
Duration
45 min
A magnetic resonance imaging scan of the brain that produces highly detailed cross-sectional pictures of brain tissue, blood vessels and surrounding structures without using ionising radiation. At ST Medical the head MRI is performed by experienced radiographers and reported by a radiologist, with options for contrast enhancement, dedicated angiography of the cerebral vessels, and focused sequences of the pituitary gland or orbits. It is commonly requested for the investigation of headaches, neurological symptoms or follow-up of known findings.
Magnetic resonance imaging of the head uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, rather than X-rays, to build cross-sectional images of the brain, its blood vessels and the structures around them. Because it shows soft tissue in fine detail, a head MRI is widely used when a clinician wants to look closely at the brain, the pituitary region or the orbits, and the technique involves no ionising radiation. At ST Medical Clinic the scan is carried out by trained radiographers and the images are reported by a radiologist, with results and an optional CD copy made available afterwards. A standard head examination is performed without contrast, while a contrast-enhanced study uses an injected gadolinium-based agent to highlight certain tissues and vessels more clearly. The clinic also offers MR angiography, which maps the cerebral arteries, as well as focused protocols for the pituitary gland and the orbits. During the scan you lie still on a motorised table that moves into the cylindrical scanner; the machine makes loud knocking sounds, for which ear protection is provided, and the whole appointment usually takes around thirty to forty-five minutes depending on the sequences requested. MRI is generally considered very safe, but the strong magnet means it is not suitable for everyone — you will be asked about pacemakers, certain implants, metal fragments and pregnancy beforehand. The radiology team reviews your referral and any specific clinical question so the most appropriate combination of sequences and contrast is chosen for your situation.
