Type
CT Scan
Duration
20 min
A computed tomography scan that uses X-rays and computer reconstruction to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body, especially good for bone, the chest and acute problems. ST Medical offers non-contrast CT of the head, sinuses, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine and joints, reported by a radiologist with an option for urgent same-day reporting. It is often used when fast, detailed imaging of bony structures or the lungs is required.
Computed tomography (CT) combines a series of X-ray measurements taken from many angles with computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional images, or slices, of the body. It is particularly strong at imaging bone, the lungs and acute conditions, and a scan is quick — the acquisition itself often takes only seconds to a couple of minutes. At ST Medical Clinic a non-contrast CT can be performed for a single region, including the head, facial bones, sinuses, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, joints and other bony areas, and the images are reviewed and reported by a radiologist. For situations where the result is needed quickly, an urgent same-day reporting option (CITO) is available. During the examination you lie on a table that moves smoothly through the ring-shaped scanner while it rotates around you; you may be asked to hold your breath briefly for chest or abdominal scans so the images are not blurred. A non-contrast study does not involve an injection. Because CT uses ionising radiation, the radiology team keeps the dose as low as reasonably possible and matches the protocol to the clinical question, and you will be asked about pregnancy beforehand. CT and MRI are complementary: CT is often chosen when fast imaging, bone detail or assessment of the lungs is the priority, while MRI is preferred for many soft-tissue questions. Bringing a referral that explains what is being looked for helps the team select the right region and settings for your scan.
