Type
Laser Therapy (HILT)
Duration
45 min
A broadband light (BBL) therapy session using the Sciton BBL HEROic platform — the highest-powered BBL device available — to treat sun damage, pigmentation, rosacea, vascular lesions, and overall skin tone through intense pulsed light delivered at high repetition rates.
The Sciton BBL HEROic at Spire Clinic is the most powerful broadband light platform currently manufactured by Sciton, delivering intense pulsed light across a customisable spectrum of wavelengths (420-1400nm) with the ability to fire at up to 4 pulses per second. The 'HEROic' designation refers to its High Energy Rapid Output capabilities — allowing practitioners to treat large areas quickly with consistent energy delivery, reducing treatment time and improving uniformity of results compared to earlier BBL generations. BBL works by delivering broadband light energy that is selectively absorbed by chromophores in the skin — melanin (responsible for brown pigmentation) and haemoglobin (responsible for red vascular lesions). By selecting specific cut-off filters, the practitioner can target brown spots and sun damage (using 515nm or 560nm filters), red vascular lesions and rosacea (using 590nm filters), or perform general skin rejuvenation across multiple chromophores simultaneously. The absorbed light converts to thermal energy, fragmenting pigment deposits and coagulating dilated vessels without damaging surrounding tissue. The landmark Stanford University study on BBL (published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 2012) demonstrated that regular BBL treatment altered gene expression in skin cells, shifting the expression pattern of aging-associated genes toward a younger profile. This finding, while requiring further validation, generated significant interest in BBL as a preventive aging intervention rather than merely a corrective one. Treatment at Spire Clinic takes approximately 45 minutes. Patients experience a sensation often described as a rubber band snap with each pulse. Post-treatment, pigmented spots darken over 3-7 days before flaking off, and vascular redness may temporarily intensify before fading. There is no open wound or significant downtime. Results are cumulative, with most patients undergoing 3-5 sessions spaced 3-4 weeks apart for comprehensive photorejuvenation.
