Root canal treatment, or endodontics, is carried out when the soft tissue (pulp) inside a tooth becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed — often from deep decay, a crack or trauma. The procedure involves removing the damaged pulp, carefully cleaning and shaping the fine canals within the root, and then sealing them to prevent reinfection. Done well, it relieves the associated pain and allows you to keep a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed.
