When a tooth has been missing for some time, the surrounding bone often shrinks, and in the upper back jaw the air-filled sinus can sit too low to allow an implant. Bone augmentation involves adding grafting material to increase the width or height of the jaw ridge, which then matures into solid bone over a healing period. A sinus lift gently raises the membrane lining the sinus floor and places graft material beneath it, creating the vertical height needed for an upper implant. Both are performed under local anaesthetic by the clinic's surgeon, and depending on the case the implant may be placed at the same time or after a period of healing. The dentist reviews the site — frequently with imaging — and explains the expected recovery, which usually involves some swelling and a soft-food period. These procedures are intended for patients who want implants but lack sufficient bone, and their suitability, extent and sequencing are confirmed individually before treatment.
