Tooth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lighten the natural colour of enamel and dentine, reducing yellowing and general discolouration that builds up over time. SmileStudio offers three routes: an in-office treatment that whitens the upper and lower arch in the clinic; a take-home system using custom-made trays and gel you apply over a short course at home; and a combined package that begins in the chair and is maintained with trays for a more pronounced, longer-lasting result. Treatment normally follows a check-up and a hygiene appointment, so that the teeth are clean and the shade lifts evenly, and so existing fillings or crowns — which do not change colour with whitening — can be discussed in advance. The most common side-effect is temporary tooth sensitivity during or just after a course, which typically resolves within a few days; the clinic can also provide desensitising care. For a single tooth that has darkened after root-canal treatment or trauma, internal (non-vital) whitening treats it from the inside over one or more visits to better match the neighbouring teeth. Results depend on the starting shade and on diet and habits such as coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, and can be topped up with the take-home trays.
