All-Ceramic / Zirconia Crown

A full-ceramic or zirconia crown that caps a damaged, heavily filled or root-treated tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. Metal-free crowns transmit light more naturally than older porcelain-fused-to-metal designs, which helps them blend with surrounding teeth. At SmileOn the tooth is scanned digitally with a 3Shape TRIOS 5 scanner rather than a traditional putty impression, and multiple crowns can be combined into a bridge to replace missing teeth.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth to rebuild it when it is too broken down, decayed or heavily filled to be restored with a simple filling, or after root canal treatment when the remaining tooth needs protection. SmileOn Dental Studio uses full-ceramic and zirconia crowns, which are metal-free and chosen for their natural appearance and strength — zirconia in particular is highly durable, while layered ceramics give excellent translucency for front teeth. Treatment usually takes two stages. First the tooth is shaped and a digital impression is captured with the 3Shape TRIOS 5 intraoral scanner, avoiding the discomfort of conventional impression material; a temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. At the second visit the finished crown is checked for fit, bite and shade and then cemented in place. The same crowns can be joined together as a bridge to span a gap where a tooth is missing, supported by the teeth on either side or by implants. Crowns are suited to teeth that are cracked, worn, discoloured or weakened, and to restoring implants. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups a well-made ceramic crown can last many years. The dentist assesses whether a crown, a filling or another option is most appropriate, and discusses shade matching and bite at the planning stage.
