A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is placed into the jawbone to take the place of a missing tooth root. Over the following weeks the bone integrates with the implant surface, creating a firm foundation onto which a crown can later be attached. Treatment begins with a CBCT cone-beam scan taken on site, which lets the implantologist assess bone volume in three dimensions and plan the position digitally before surgery. The implant itself is placed under local anaesthetic in a procedure that usually takes around an hour, after which a healing period of several months allows the bone to bond with the fixture. Where the bone is too thin or shallow, the clinic can carry out augmentation (bone grafting) or, in the upper back jaw, a sinus lift to create enough support; these are quoted in addition to the implant. A temporary crown can be provided during healing, and the definitive implant crown is fitted once integration is confirmed and priced as a separate item. Implants are well suited to adults with healthy gums who want a fixed replacement that does not rely on grinding down neighbouring teeth, as a bridge would.
