Treatment starts with an examination and usually a professional clean, since whitening works best on healthy teeth and removes surface stain first; the dentist also checks for any decay or sensitivity and confirms that existing fillings, crowns or veneers — which do not change colour with bleaching — will still match. Some temporary sensitivity during or after whitening is common and settles quickly. Results vary between individuals depending on the original shade and the cause of discolouration, and are associated with longer-lasting effects when combined with good oral hygiene and avoidance of strongly staining food, drink and tobacco.
