A porcelain crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged, heavily filled or root-treated tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. At Smile Studio the tooth is prepared and an impression taken, with a temporary crown fitted while the permanent crown is made. The finished crown is colour-matched to the surrounding teeth. Crowns are used to protect weakened teeth, rebuild broken-down teeth and to restore implants.
About this treatment
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth, used when a tooth is too broken down, cracked or heavily filled to be restored with a simple filling, or after root canal treatment when the remaining tooth needs protecting. The porcelain crown offered at Smile Studio combines a strong substructure with a porcelain surface for a natural, tooth-coloured finish.
Treatment usually takes two stages. At the first visit the tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic to make room for the crown, an impression or digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown — made either in the practice or by the laboratory — is fitted to protect the tooth and maintain appearance. The dental technician then constructs the crown to match the size, shape and shade of the neighbouring teeth, and at the second visit it is tried in, adjusted…
