Chemical Peel for Acne

Chemical peels remain one of the most evidence-backed treatments for acne-prone skin, and Skinscape Clinic offers customised peel protocols designed to address different presentations of acne — from active inflammatory breakouts to comedonal congestion and post-acne discolouration. The clinic primarily uses salicylic acid and Jessner peels, both of which are oil-soluble and therefore particularly effective at penetrating sebum-filled pores. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that directly target acne-causing bacteria. Jessner peels combine salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol for a more aggressive exfoliation suited to moderate-to-severe congestion. At Skinscape, peel selection is made on a case-by-case basis following a skin assessment by Dr Harvey Ho. Concentration, number of layers, and contact time are all adjusted based on the patient's acne severity, skin sensitivity, and previous treatment history. This personalised approach minimises the risk of over-exfoliation and ensures the peel targets the right depth. The procedure takes approximately 10–30 minutes. A mild tingling or stinging sensation is common during application, which subsides quickly. After the specified contact time, the peel is neutralised and removed. Patients may experience 3–5 days of mild flaking and sensitivity as the skin sheds the treated layers. Sun protection is essential during this period. For active acne, peels are typically scheduled every 3–4 weeks as part of a course of 4–6 sessions. They are often combined with other Skinscape treatments — such as the Signature Medi-Facial or LED light therapy — to address acne from multiple angles. Regular peels also help fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) left by previous breakouts, progressively evening out skin tone.
