The mechanism depends on the optical absorption properties of carbon particles: carbon strongly absorbs the Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser wavelength, so when the laser is fired across the carbon-coated skin, the energy goes almost entirely into the carbon, not into the surrounding tissue. The carbon mask is applied in a thin layer and left to penetrate into the follicular openings and pores for 10–15 minutes. During this time, the carbon particles physically absorb sebum, dead cells, and debris from within the pore. When the first, fast laser pass fires, the carbon particles vaporise instantaneously (the characteristic crackling sound), carrying the pore contents with them in a micro-explosion that exfoliates the very outermost skin layer and clears the follicle.
