Medical-grade facials and chemical peels at Shine Dermatology Clinic are distinct from salon treatments: they are prescribed and supervised by Dr Rajaratnam, use professional-concentration actives that are not available in over-the-counter formulations, and are tailored to each patient's skin diagnosis rather than a generic skin type classification. Medical-grade facials combine deep cleansing, extraction, exfoliation, and active ingredient infusion in a structured protocol designed to address specific concerns such as active acne, congested pores, dull skin, or dehydration. Hydrating and brightening serums containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, tranexamic acid, and peptides are applied under occlusion to maximise dermal penetration. Chemical peels use controlled application of exfoliating acids to remove damaged outer skin layers and stimulate regeneration of smoother, more even-toned skin beneath. The clinic uses alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic and lactic acid for mild resurfacing, beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid for oily and acne-prone skin, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for more significant resurfacing of textural irregularities and pigmentation. The peel depth — superficial, medium, or deep — is selected based on the patient's skin condition, Fitzpatrick skin type, and treatment history. Superficial peels require no downtime and are suitable for maintenance care between laser or RF sessions. Medium-depth TCA peels produce several days of peeling and redness but can significantly improve skin quality and even pigmentation in a single treatment. All patients receive pre-peel conditioning and post-peel skincare protocols to optimise outcomes and protect the healing skin barrier.
