Root canal treatment, or endodontics, becomes necessary when the soft tissue inside a tooth — the pulp, which contains its nerve and blood supply — is irreversibly inflamed or infected. This commonly follows deep decay, a large failing filling, a crack or trauma, and can cause significant toothache or an abscess. The aim of the treatment is to remove the damaged pulp, disinfect the hollow root canal system and seal it, so the natural tooth can stay in place instead of being taken out. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
