CT Angiography (CTA)

Type

CT Angiography

Duration

1 hour

CT examination with IV contrast to visualise the blood vessels (arteries). Performed at AZ Monica Campus Deurne. Indications include suspected peripheral arterial disease, abdominal aortic pathology, and reduced blood flow to organs or extremities. Zero CT supplement under Belgian law; statutory co-payment only. Medical prescription required.

CT angiography (CTA) at Radiology Antwerpen uses intravenous iodinated contrast material to produce high-resolution images of the arterial tree, enabling non-invasive assessment of vessel anatomy and pathology across the body's main vascular territories. CTA is typically performed at the AZ Monica Campus Deurne, where the CT equipment supports the volume acquisitions and high-temporal-resolution scanning required for diagnostic-quality angiographic images. Common indications include suspected peripheral arterial occlusive disease — such as claudication, rest pain, or diminished pulses in the lower limbs — abdominal aortic aneurysm, renal artery stenosis, mesenteric ischaemia, and suspected pulmonary embolism. The referring physician's clinical question determines whether examination covers the carotid and cerebrovascular territory, the thoracic and abdominal aorta, or the iliac and lower-limb vessels. On the day of examination the patient is positioned supine on the CT table. A venous catheter is inserted, usually in the antecubital fossa, to administer the contrast bolus automatically at the start of the scan. A brief sensation of warmth, transient taste disturbance, or the urge to urinate during injection is normal and resolves within minutes. Patients with known iodine allergy or impaired renal function must declare this in advance: iodine hypersensitivity requires a 24-hour pre-medication protocol, and significant renal impairment may require pre- and post-procedural hydration in a day hospital setting. After the scan, the patient can go home without restriction. The radiologist prepares a written report that is delivered to both the patient and the referring doctor via a secure digital code. The radiologist's findings describe vessel morphology, calibre, stenosis degree (if present), atherosclerotic burden, and any incidental vascular findings. Further management — including whether endovascular or surgical intervention is warranted — is discussed by the referring physician based on the CTA result. As with all CT examinations at this practice, no supplementary fee is charged on top of the statutory RIZIV/INAMI co-payment, in compliance with the 2023 Vandenbroucke law. A medical prescription from a licensed Belgian or recognised European physician is required before the examination can be performed.
