MRI of the lower abdomen and pelvis evaluating the bladder, reproductive organs, rectum, and pelvic lymph nodes. Detailed pelvic soft-tissue assessment.
The lower abdomen MRI provides imaging of the pelvic organs and lower abdominal structures. In female patients the examination covers the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and adnexal regions. In male patients the focus includes the prostate, seminal vesicles, and inguinal regions. Both sexes receive assessment of the bladder wall, rectum, pelvic sidewall muscles, and inguinal and pelvic lymph nodes. The protocol includes axial, sagittal, and coronal T1 and T2-weighted sequences optimized for pelvic anatomy. The radiologist evaluates for pelvic masses, lymphadenopathy, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, prostatic pathology, rectal wall abnormalities, and inguinal hernias. The high soft-tissue contrast of MRI is particularly advantageous for characterizing adnexal masses and staging pelvic malignancies. Common indications include pelvic pain of uncertain origin, fibroid mapping before treatment, endometriosis assessment, ovarian mass characterization, rectal cancer staging, and assessment of pelvic floor disorders.
