MRI of the clavicle and adjacent joints for evaluating fractures, osteolysis, sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular joint pathology.
The clavicle MRI provides imaging of the entire clavicle from the sternoclavicular joint to the acromioclavicular joint, including the surrounding soft tissues. This examination is less commonly performed but valuable for specific clinical scenarios where plain radiographs are inconclusive or where soft-tissue involvement needs characterization. The protocol includes coronal, axial, and sagittal T1 and T2-weighted sequences with STIR for bone marrow oedema. The radiologist evaluates for occult fractures, distal clavicular osteolysis (common in weight lifters and overhead athletes), sternoclavicular joint arthritis or instability, and bone or soft-tissue masses. The examination also covers the subclavian vessels and brachial plexus that pass beneath the clavicle. Common indications include persistent pain at either end of the clavicle despite normal X-rays, suspected stress fracture in athletes, post-traumatic evaluation when clinical concern exceeds radiographic findings, and characterization of clavicular masses. The radiation-free nature makes it appropriate for younger patients and athletes requiring serial monitoring.
