Botulinum toxin injected into the skin to reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, palms or soles. By temporarily blocking the nerve signals that switch on the sweat glands, it can markedly cut sweating in the treated area for several months. The treatment is performed by a surgeon under topical anaesthetic and is well suited to people whose daily life or clothing is affected by heavy localised sweating.
About this treatment
Treatment of excessive sweating with botulinum toxin targets the small nerve endings that stimulate the eccrine sweat glands. A grid of tiny intradermal injections across the affected area temporarily interrupts those signals, so the glands produce far less sweat. It is one of the most reliable options for focal hyperhidrosis of the underarms, palms and soles, where antiperspirants and other measures often fall short.
At QKA the treated area is mapped and numbed with EMLA or Anesderm cream — particularly important for the sensitive palms and soles — before many fine injections are placed just under the skin.
