Type
Extraction
Duration
30 min
A simple extraction removes a visible, accessible tooth that cannot be saved — for example through severe decay, advanced gum disease or a fracture — under local anaesthetic. At Uśmiech, a surgery-led practice, even routine removals are handled by clinicians who carry out oral surgery daily, and anxious patients can be treated under sedation. The dentist will always discuss whether the tooth can be saved first, and how the gap can later be filled with an implant, bridge or denture.
Sometimes a tooth cannot be repaired and removing it is the best option — common reasons include extensive decay, a tooth broken below a usable level, severe gum disease that has loosened it, or a stubborn baby tooth. A simple extraction deals with a tooth that has erupted normally and can be reached directly. After numbing the area with local anaesthetic, the dentist gently loosens the tooth within its socket and lifts it out; you feel pressure rather than pain. The procedure itself is usually quick. At Uśmiech extractions are carried out within a practice whose main focus is oral and maxillofacial surgery, so the team removes teeth routinely and can manage awkward cases. Because a consultant anaesthetist works with the clinic, patients who are very anxious, or who need several teeth removed, can be treated under sedation or general anaesthesia rather than local anaesthetic alone. Before any extraction the dentist discusses whether the tooth could realistically be saved by other treatment, since keeping a natural tooth is generally preferable. Afterwards you are given clear aftercare advice — a blood clot needs to form in the socket, so the area is kept undisturbed for the first day, avoiding rinsing, smoking and very hot food. Most sockets heal uneventfully over the following days and weeks. The clinic can also plan how to replace the missing tooth later, whether with an implant, a bridge or a denture, so the gap does not affect your bite or appearance.
