Professional scaling removes hardened plaque (tartar) from the teeth and along the gum line that brushing cannot shift, helping keep gums healthy and breath fresh. At Uśmiech it is performed by qualified dental hygienists and is a sensible routine step, especially before surgery or implant treatment. Removing tartar is associated with reducing gum inflammation and is a foundation of good long-term oral health.
Even with careful brushing, plaque gradually hardens into tartar (calculus) — a rough, mineralised deposit that sticks to the teeth and collects below the gum line, where a toothbrush cannot reach. Tartar harbours bacteria and is associated with gum inflammation, bleeding and, over time, gum disease. Professional scaling uses ultrasonic and hand instruments to break up and remove these deposits from the tooth surfaces and just under the gum margin, leaving the teeth smoother and the gums better able to stay healthy. At Uśmiech scaling is carried out by the practice's dental hygienists, Mirosława Bańbor and Wiktoria Borkovska. A typical appointment removes built-up tartar and surface staining and finishes by polishing the teeth; the hygienist can also advise on brushing and cleaning between the teeth at home. How long it takes and the exact cost depend on how much build-up has accumulated since your last clean. Regular hygiene visits are a practical foundation for keeping your own teeth and supporting other dental work — they are particularly recommended before gum treatment, and before and after implant placement, where healthy tissue helps protect the result. The treatment is comfortable, requires no anaesthetic in most cases, and there is no downtime afterwards; some people notice mild, short-lived sensitivity, which settles quickly.
