A crown is a tooth-shaped cover, cemented over a prepared tooth, that rebuilds a tooth too damaged for a simple filling — for example after a large cavity, a fracture, or root-canal treatment that has left the tooth brittle. By enclosing the whole visible part of the tooth, a crown restores its strength, bite and shape and protects what remains of the natural structure.
