3D Dental CT Scan (CBCT)

Type

CT Scan

Duration

20 min

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a low-dose 3D X-ray that shows the teeth, jawbone, nerves and sinuses in cross-section — far more detail than a flat dental X-ray. Uśmiech was among the first practices in Jelenia Góra to install a latest-generation 3D tomograph, and uses it to plan implants, assess impacted wisdom teeth and investigate complex problems. Scans of the whole dentition, a single jaw, the sinuses or a small region are available.

A cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan is a specialised three-dimensional X-ray for the teeth and jaws. The scanner rotates once around your head and reconstructs a detailed 3D image that can be viewed slice by slice, revealing things a conventional flat dental X-ray cannot — the exact height and width of bone, the path of the nerve in the lower jaw, the position and shape of impacted teeth, the floor of the sinuses, and the full anatomy of root canals. CBCT uses a focused beam and is a comparatively low radiation dose for the information it provides, and the scan itself takes only seconds while you stand or sit still. Uśmiech was among the first clinics in Jelenia Góra to install a latest-generation 3D cone-beam tomograph, and it underpins much of the practice's surgical work. For implant planning it shows precisely where bone is available and where vital structures lie, so implants can be placed accurately. Before removing an impacted wisdom tooth, it maps the tooth's relationship to the nerve and sinus to make surgery safer. It is also valuable for difficult root canals, suspected cysts or lesions, and assessing the jaw joints. The clinic offers a range of fields of view so the scan is matched to the question being asked — the whole dentition, a single jaw, the maxillary sinuses, or a small fragment — keeping the imaging proportionate. A standard panoramic (pantomogram) X-ray giving a single flat overview of all the teeth is also available. The scan is requested as part of an examination or treatment plan, and the findings are explained to you by the clinician.
