Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and disinfects the canals, and seals them to save a tooth that would otherwise need extraction. At Pro Medical Clinic Dent endodontic treatment is priced by the number of canals, and retreatment of a previously root-filled tooth is also offered. A crown or filling to rebuild the tooth afterwards is recommended and quoted separately. The aim is to relieve pain and keep the natural tooth in function.

Root canal treatment, or endodontics, treats a tooth whose inner pulp — the nerve and blood supply inside the root canals — has become infected or irreversibly inflamed, often through deep decay, a crack or trauma. Left untreated this can cause severe pain and abscess formation and usually leads to loss of the tooth. The treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, disinfects them and seals them with a root filling, allowing the natural tooth to be kept rather than extracted. At Pro Medical Clinic Dent the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic so it is comfortable, and the fee is based on how many canals the tooth has — front teeth typically have one, while molars can have three or four. The clinic also offers retreatment, where a previously root-filled tooth that has reinfected or failed is reopened, cleaned again and resealed, and can remove separated instruments from earlier treatment where needed. On-site imaging supports accurate diagnosis and assessment of the canals. Because a root-treated tooth loses internal structure and can become brittle, a definitive restoration — usually a crown, sometimes a filling or overlay — is strongly recommended afterwards to protect it from fracture, and this is quoted separately from the endodontic fee. The dentist will explain the number of canals, the likely number of visits, and the recommended final restoration before starting, and will discuss the alternative of extraction and replacement where the tooth's outlook is poor.
