A porcelain crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged, heavily filled or root-treated tooth to restore its strength, shape and appearance. At Pro Medical Clinic Dent crowns are made to match the colour of the surrounding teeth for a natural look. A crown can protect a weakened tooth from further damage and is often recommended after root canal treatment or where a large filling is no longer adequate. A long-term temporary crown can be provided while the final crown is made.
About this treatment
A dental crown is a tailor-made cap that fits over the whole visible part of a tooth. It is used when a tooth is too broken down, cracked or heavily filled to be restored with a simple filling, and it is frequently placed after root canal treatment to protect the more brittle, hollowed-out tooth from fracture. By fully covering the tooth, a crown restores its natural shape, strength and biting surface while improving its appearance.
At Pro Medical Clinic Dent a porcelain crown is shaded to match the neighbouring teeth so it blends in. The tooth is prepared, an impression or digital scan is taken, and the crown is made in the laboratory; a long-term temporary crown can be worn in the meantime so the tooth stays protected and presentable. Once ready, the definitive crown is checked for fit and bite and cemented in place. Where a tooth has lost a lot of structure, a build-up (core) is…
Crowns are suited to adults with a structurally compromised but restorable tooth, including after endodontic treatment. The dentist assesses whether a crown, an overlay or another restoration is the best option, and explains the materials, number of visits and total cost, including any preparatory work, before starting.
