High-resolution 3 Tesla multiparametric MRI for prostate evaluation.
A pelvic MRI produces high-resolution images of the organs and structures within the pelvis, including the bladder, rectum, pelvic floor muscles, and reproductive organs. In men, pelvic MRI with multiparametric sequences (mpMRI) has become the standard for evaluating the prostate gland, providing T2-weighted, diffusion-weighted, and dynamic contrast-enhanced images that together help characterize prostate tissue. In women, pelvic MRI offers superior visualization of the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures compared to ultrasound, and is particularly useful for characterizing uterine fibroids, ovarian masses, and endometriosis. Pelvic MRI avoids radiation exposure and provides excellent soft-tissue contrast that CT cannot match in this anatomical region.
Key Details
- Scan Duration
- 30–50 minutes
- Radiation
- None (MRI uses magnetic fields)
- Contrast
- Dynamic contrast often included
- Imaging Type
- MRI imaging
- Common Use
- Prostate evaluation, gynecological assessment
Who Is This For?
Men over 50 or those with elevated PSA levels seeking detailed prostate evaluation. Women with complex ovarian findings, uterine fibroids, or suspected endometriosis. Anyone requiring detailed pelvic soft-tissue evaluation beyond what ultrasound or CT provides. Individuals pursuing comprehensive health screening who want pelvic organ assessment included.
What's Included
Preparation Required
A moderately full bladder is usually preferred — drink 2–3 glasses of water one hour before the scan and do not empty your bladder. Fast for 4 hours before the scan if contrast will be used. An anti-spasmodic injection may be administered to reduce bowel motion and improve image quality. Remove all metal objects. Inform the facility of any implants, metal fragments, or kidney concerns. Arrive 15–20 minutes early for safety screening.
