Shoulder MRI

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

25 min

MRI of the shoulder joint evaluating the rotator cuff tendons, labrum, biceps tendon, and glenohumeral joint structures. Identifies tears, impingement, bursitis, and degenerative changes affecting shoulder function.

Shoulder MRI at PrivatMRT Berlin delivers detailed cross-sectional images of the glenohumeral joint and surrounding structures. The examination focuses on the four rotator cuff tendons (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor), the glenoid labrum, the long head of the biceps tendon, the subacromial-subdeltoid bursa, and the acromioclavicular joint. Rotator cuff pathology is the most common finding, ranging from tendinosis (degenerative thickening without a tear) through partial-thickness tears to full-thickness ruptures with tendon retraction. The supraspinatus is the most frequently affected tendon, particularly in patients over 40 or those performing overhead activities. Labral tears, including SLAP lesions in younger athletes, are assessed on multiple planes and may require MR arthrography for definitive characterisation. Subacromial impingement -- where the rotator cuff is compressed between the humeral head and the acromion -- is a clinical-radiological correlation that MRI supports by demonstrating the degree of subacromial space narrowing, acromial morphology, and associated bursal fluid. Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) may show characteristic capsular thickening and enhancement on MRI, though it remains primarily a clinical diagnosis. The scan takes approximately 25 minutes with the patient's arm positioned in a dedicated shoulder coil. No special preparation is needed. PrivatMRT's radiologist provides a structured report covering each anatomical structure, which can be forwarded to the treating orthopaedic surgeon for surgical planning or to guide physiotherapy rehabilitation. Self-referral is accepted -- no GP letter is required.
