Root canal (endodontic) treatment is used to save a natural tooth when the soft pulp inside it — which contains the nerve and blood supply — becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed, often through deep decay, a crack or trauma. Left untreated this can cause pain and abscess formation, so the goal of treatment is to remove the diseased pulp, thoroughly clean and shape the root canals, disinfect them and seal them to prevent further infection, keeping the tooth in place rather than extracting it.
