Dental Cone-Beam CT Scan (CBCT)

Type

CT Scan

Duration

20 min

A dental cone-beam CT (CBCT) produces a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures, giving far more detail than a standard dental X-ray. At Prestige Dent it is used to plan implants, assess impacted teeth, examine root anatomy before endodontic treatment and evaluate bone, all on-site. The scan is quick and the field can be focused on a few teeth or the whole jaw to keep the radiation dose appropriate.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a specialised dental scan that captures a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jawbones, sinuses and nerve canals. Unlike a conventional flat dental X-ray, a CBCT lets the dentist view the anatomy from any angle and take accurate measurements of bone height, width and density, which is why it has become an important planning tool in modern dentistry. Having it available in-house means diagnosis and treatment planning can happen in a single visit. At Prestige Dent the scan is used across several specialties: to plan the exact position of dental implants and check there is sufficient bone, to assess impacted or unerupted teeth and their relationship to nerves before surgery, to examine complex root canal anatomy before endodontic treatment, and to evaluate the jaw before procedures such as a sinus lift or bone regeneration. The scan itself is fast — the machine rotates around the head while you stay still for a short time — and the clinic can focus the field of view on a small segment of three to four teeth, a single jaw, or both jaws together, choosing the smallest area needed so the radiation dose is kept appropriate to the diagnostic purpose. The clinic also offers digital panoramic (pantomogram) and cephalometric X-rays for orthodontic and general assessment, and small single-tooth RVG images. Imaging is carried out on referral as part of a treatment plan; the dentist explains what the scan is for and reviews the findings with you.
