During the scan, the patient lies comfortably on a padded examination couch while a mechanical arm passes slowly over the body, typically focusing on the lumbar spine and hip — the most fracture-prone sites. The procedure takes only 10 to 15 minutes and uses minimal radiation, far less than a standard chest X-ray, making it safe for regular monitoring.

The DEXA scan produces a T-score, which compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult, and a Z-score, which compares it to age-matched peers.
