High-Power Laser Therapy

High-power laser therapy (HPLT) uses class IV laser diodes to deliver therapeutic photon energy deep into tissue, reaching structures that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) cannot effectively penetrate. Operating at wavelengths between 800 and 1064 nanometres and power outputs of 10 to 30 watts, the laser achieves meaningful photobiomodulation at depths of 4 to 8 centimetres — sufficient to reach joints, deep tendons, and spinal structures.

The photobiomodulation mechanism involves absorption of laser photons by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, which upregulates cellular ATP production, reduces oxidative stress, and modulates inflammatory mediators. Clinically, this translates to measurable pain reduction, decreased swelling, and accelerated healing. The thermal component of high-power laser also increases local blood flow and tissue extensibility.
