Focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy (fESWT) delivering concentrated acoustic energy to a precise tissue depth for targeted treatment of deep tendinopathies, calcifications, and non-union fractures.

About this treatment

Focused shockwave therapy generates high-energy acoustic waves that converge at a specific focal point within the tissue, allowing the clinician to target pathology at a precise depth — typically 2 to 6 centimetres beneath the skin surface. This precision makes focused shockwave the treatment of choice for deep-seated conditions that radial shockwave cannot effectively reach, including hip bursitis, deep rotator cuff calcifications, and certain bone…

The focused shockwave device at Prague Body Clinic uses electromagnetic or piezoelectric generation to produce waves with higher peak pressures than radial devices. The treating physiotherapist uses anatomical landmarks and, when needed, ultrasound guidance to position the focal zone precisely at the target tissue. Treatment typically involves 1,500 to 2,500 impulses per session at energy levels calibrated to the specific condition and patient tolerance.

Focused shockwave works through both mechanical and biological mechanisms. The concentrated energy disrupts calcific deposits and scar tissue, while the controlled microtrauma stimulates neovascularisation (new blood vessel formation) and the release of growth factors that accelerate tissue healing. For non-union fractures, focused shockwave has demonstrated the ability to restart stalled bone healing processes.
