Laser hair removal at POWAB Clinic uses selective photothermolysis to target the melanin pigment within hair follicles. The laser emits a specific wavelength that is preferentially absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft and follicular bulb, converting light energy to heat. This thermal energy damages the dermal papilla and surrounding follicular structures responsible for hair growth, while the surrounding skin — containing less melanin — absorbs comparatively little energy and remains largely unaffected. The treatment is only effective on hairs in the active growth phase (anagen), during which the hair shaft is connected to the follicular papilla and the melanin concentration is at its highest. Because only 20 to 30 percent of hairs in any given area are in anagen at any one time, a course of 6 to 8 sessions is typically required to catch the full population of follicles across their growth cycles. Sessions are spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the body area and its hair growth cycle duration — shorter intervals for the face, longer for the legs and back. During the 20-minute treatment, the practitioner applies the laser handpiece to the skin, delivering pulses across the treatment zone. Each pulse produces a brief snapping or stinging sensation, often compared to the snap of a rubber band. A cooling mechanism (contact cooling or cryogen spray) is integrated into the handpiece to protect the epidermis and reduce discomfort. No topical anaesthetic is typically required for most body areas, though sensitive zones like the upper lip or bikini line may benefit from numbing cream. Results are cumulative. After each session, treated hairs shed over the following 1 to 3 weeks, and the regrowth from subsequent cycles is progressively finer, lighter, and slower. Most patients achieve 70 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction after completing the full course.
