Neural Reset Therapy (NRT) is a specialised manual technique that works through the nervous system rather than directly on muscles. By applying specific directional pressure to mechanoreceptors — the nerve bundles distributed throughout muscle tissue — the therapist sends a signal that prompts the brain to reset the muscle's resting tension. The result is an immediate release of muscle spasm and pain without the need for stretching, needling, or force. Sessions are 30 minutes, client remains fully clothed, and no oils are used.
Neural Reset Therapy was developed by Lawrence Woods, a US physiotherapist, and is based on the principle that muscles exist in a state of neural tone governed by the brain and spinal cord. Conventional massage and stretching work on muscle tissue mechanically; NRT works on the neurological signal that sets how much tension the muscle holds at rest. The mechanism: muscles contain mechanoreceptors — specialised sensory nerve endings that detect pressure, stretch, and position. By applying specific, calibrated pressure to these mechanoreceptors in a precisely sequenced way, the NRT therapist generates an afferent signal that travels to the central nervous system. The brain interprets this signal and responds by resetting the motor output to the muscle — effectively releasing the spasm or holding pattern that was generating pain. At Physio Clinic Suchánek, NRT is delivered by Mgr. Tomáš Zloch, the clinic's dedicated NRT practitioner. The session requires no undressing: the client sits or lies clothed while the therapist locates the target mechanoreceptors through palpation and applies sequential pressure contacts, each held for a precise duration. Between contacts, the therapist asks the client to perform a small active movement — a breath, a nod, or a limb rotation — to facilitate the neurological response. Most patients report a noticeable change in muscle tension or pain within the session itself. The effect is not limited to where the pressure is applied: because the reset travels through the nervous system, referred pain patterns, distal tightness, and headaches stemming from cervical muscle hypertonicity often resolve alongside the primary complaint. Conditions responding well to NRT: acute back and neck spasm, tension headaches and migraines with muscular triggers, chronic shoulder and trapezius holding patterns, carpal tunnel with accompanying forearm tension, tennis and golfer's elbow, and post-surgical muscle guarding. Contraindications: active oncological disease, acute systemic infection, epilepsy, certain spinal pathologies (ankylosing spondylitis, unstable disc herniation), severe psychiatric conditions, pregnancy, and heart conditions — discuss your medical history at booking. Frequency: many presentations respond within 3–6 sessions. Acute muscle spasm may improve significantly after a single session. Chronic patterns typically require a longer series.
