Lymphatic drainage massage at Physio Clinic Suchánek uses slow, gentle hand movements directed toward the lymph node clusters to encourage the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic vessels. Unlike conventional massage, it works at minimal pressure — the lymphatic capillaries lie just beneath the skin and require only gentle rhythmic pumping to be stimulated. The treatment reduces swelling, supports immune function, and clears metabolic waste from the tissues, with effects measurable in reduced limb circumference after a course of sessions.
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a precisely sequenced massage technique developed by Danish physiotherapists Emil and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s and now widely used in oncology support, post-surgical rehabilitation, and general wellness. At Physio Clinic Suchánek it is delivered as a hands-on clinical service by trained massage therapists. The lymphatic system does not have its own pump — unlike the cardiovascular system where the heart drives circulation, lymph moves through a combination of smooth muscle contractions in the vessel walls, body movement, and gravity. When lymph transport is insufficient — due to sedentary lifestyle, post-surgical disruption of lymphatic vessels, limb dependency, or systemic conditions — fluid accumulates in the interstitial space, producing the swelling and heaviness that characterises lymphoedema and general oedema. Manual lymphatic drainage stimulates the lymphatic vessels through extremely gentle, rhythmic pressure applied in the direction of lymph flow — from distal (limb extremities) toward proximal (trunk) and always toward the regional lymph node clusters (axillary, inguinal, cervical). The pressure used is significantly lighter than conventional massage: the lymphatic capillaries sit 0.1–0.2 mm below the skin surface and respond to skin traction rather than muscle compression. Excessive pressure collapses the capillaries and reduces rather than enhances flow. The session at Suchánek follows a standard MLD sequence: the therapist begins at the major node clusters (neck, axillae, groin) to clear the central collecting points before working distally. This proximal-first, distal-second approach ensures that cleared pathways are available as the distal fluid is mobilised — preventing backlog in the collecting vessels. A course of 10 sessions is recommended for achieving lasting results in conditions involving chronic oedema or post-surgical lymphatic disruption. Single sessions are beneficial for acute post-exercise or travel swelling, pre-event preparation in athletes, and immune system support during periods of elevated stress. Contraindications: acute infections and active cellulitis, cardiac oedema (uncompensated heart failure), acute deep vein thrombosis, active malignancy in the drainage area, renal failure. Preparation: wear comfortable, loose clothing. Do not apply creams or oils before the session. Drink water before and after to support fluid movement.
