Thulium Laser — Skin Resurfacing

The Thulium laser at Petra Clinic is a fractional non-ablative laser that creates thousands of microscopic thermal columns through the full dermis without removing the overlying epidermis — a technique called micro-channelling. Each channel triggers a localised healing response that replaces damaged collagen with new organised fibres, improving pigmentation, acne scars, stretch marks, uneven texture and fine lines. Because the epidermis remains intact, recovery is substantially faster than with ablative fractional lasers: clients typically manage four to five days of mild flaking. The thulium wavelength (1927 nm or similar) is absorbed strongly by water in the dermis and penetrates to mid-dermis depth, making it suitable for year-round use with appropriate photoprotection.

Petra Clinic's Thulium Laser treatment uses the thulium-fibre laser wavelength — typically 1927 nm — which occupies a unique niche in the fractional laser spectrum. At this wavelength, absorption by the water-rich dermis is high but not as extreme as short-pulsed ablative erbium wavelengths, enabling controlled non-ablative fractional resurfacing at mid-dermal depth. During treatment, the device delivers an array of micro-beams across the skin surface, each creating a column of coagulated tissue extending through the epidermis and into the dermis. The surrounding untreated skin bridges each channel, providing rapid re-epithelialisation within 24–48 hours, while the dermal columns undergo a weeks-long remodelling process: inflammation, fibroblast recruitment, and eventual deposition of type I collagen. This dual-depth wound response — fast epidermal repair plus slow dermal remodelling — distinguishes fractional thulium from more aggressive ablative resurfacing. Clients typically see significant improvement in skin texture and tone after a single session, with cumulative benefit over a series. Petra Clinic treats the face, cheeks, forehead, neck, décolletage and backs of the hands — areas where photoageing, pigmentation irregularity, acne scarring and fine lines are most prominent. Downtime involves 2–5 days of micro-flaking as the epidermis regenerates, during which no makeup or active skincare should be applied. Year-round use is possible with daily broad-spectrum SPF50 in the weeks around treatment. Multiple sessions at six-to-twelve-week intervals improve each of the targeted concerns cumulatively.
