The LightSheer DUET operates at 810 nm — a wavelength selectively absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle and shaft, allowing the laser energy to heat the follicle to the thermal threshold needed to damage the dermal papilla and stem cell reservoir that drives hair regrowth, without equivalent absorption in the surrounding skin tissue. What distinguishes the DUET system from conventional diode lasers is its dual handpiece design: the standard ChillTip handpiece for small and precise areas (face, neck, underarms, bikini) uses a cooled sapphire contact tip that maintains the epidermis at a lower temperature during energy delivery, protecting the skin surface while allowing higher fluences at the follicular level; the High Speed (HS) handpiece for large areas (back, chest, legs) uses vacuum-assisted suction to draw skin into the handpiece, mechanically bringing the deep follicle closer to the laser energy source so that equivalent therapeutic fluence can be delivered at lower total energy, reducing pain and improving large-area treatment efficiency. The suction also stretches the skin slightly, which has been observed to reduce pain perception in clinical use. Six to eight sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart are required to treat follicles across all phases of the hair cycle — only follicles in the active anagen growth phase are photothermally vulnerable at any given time, necessitating a multi-session protocol timed to cycle through the complete follicular population. After the full primary course, treated areas are associated with 70–90% permanent hair reduction for most patients. Touch-up sessions may be recommended annually for fine maintenance.
