MRI scan of shoulder joint for rotator cuff and labrum assessment.
About this treatment
A joint or musculoskeletal MRI produces detailed images of the bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues of a specific joint. MRI is the imaging modality of choice for evaluating internal joint structures because it provides exceptional soft-tissue contrast without radiation. For the knee, this includes visualization of the menisci, cruciate and collateral ligaments, and articular cartilage. For the shoulder, it reveals the rotator cuff tendons, labrum, and biceps tendon. Each joint has dedicated coils and imaging protocols optimized for its unique anatomy. The scan typically takes 30–45 minutes for a single joint and requires the area to remain still throughout the examination.
Good to know
- Scan Duration
- 30–45 minutes per joint
- Radiation
- None (MRI uses magnetic fields)
- Contrast
- Usually without; arthrogram if requested
- Imaging Type
- MRI imaging
- Common Use
- Joint injury evaluation, sports medicine
Who is this for?
Anyone experiencing persistent joint pain, swelling, or instability. Athletes with sports injuries or those returning to activity after joint problems. People considering or recovering from joint surgery who need detailed pre- or post-operative imaging. Active individuals over 40 wanting to assess cartilage and soft-tissue health as part of a musculoskeletal longevity evaluation.
Preparation required
Remove all metal objects including jewelry, watches, belts, and hair clips before the scan. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal fasteners — you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Inform the facility in advance if you have any implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or metal fragments in your body. Arrive 15–20 minutes early to complete a safety screening questionnaire. If contrast dye is required, you may be asked to fast for 4 hours beforehand. Inform your technologist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have kidney concerns.
