The in-office option is carried out in the clinic in a single supervised session: the gums are protected and a higher-concentration gel is applied to the teeth in timed cycles, giving a visible change in one appointment. The take-home option uses thin, custom-made trays produced from impressions of your teeth, together with professional gel that you wear for a set period each day over one to two weeks, building the result more gradually at home. Before whitening, a short assessment checks that the teeth and gums are healthy and identifies any fillings, crowns or veneers, which do not change colour with whitening and may need to be reviewed afterwards. A hygiene visit is often recommended first so the starting shade is accurate. Temporary tooth sensitivity is the most common after-effect and usually settles within a day or two; using a desensitising toothpaste can help. Results are associated with a noticeably brighter smile, and longevity depends on diet and habits — limiting staining drinks and not smoking helps the effect last, with occasional top-up gel extending it.
