The professional hygiene package at OrthoTeam is a single appointment that brings together the core elements of preventive dental care. The session begins with ultrasonic scaling, which uses high-frequency vibration to break up and remove the hardened calculus (tartar) that builds up along the gum line and between teeth and cannot be cleared by brushing alone. This is followed by airflow or mechanical polishing, where a stream of fine powder and water, or a soft polishing cup, lifts away coffee, tea, wine and tobacco staining and leaves the enamel smooth so that new plaque adheres less readily. The visit finishes with a fluoride application to help remineralise and strengthen the outer enamel. Removing plaque and tartar is associated with healthier gums and is a recognised part of reducing the risk of gum inflammation and decay, and a smoother, cleaner surface also makes day-to-day home care more effective. The appointment is comfortable and typically takes around an hour. For most adults a hygiene visit every six to twelve months is appropriate, though patients with gum concerns, orthodontic appliances or a tendency to build tartar quickly may be advised to come more often. A hygiene appointment is also commonly scheduled before tooth whitening or restorative treatment so the teeth are clean and the results are easier to assess.
