A cervical screening for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) strains associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer. Involves an internal examination with a cervical swab, processed by the ISO 15189-certified Reinier Haga MDC laboratory.
Human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, and while most HPV infections clear spontaneously, persistent infection with high-risk strains — particularly HPV 16 and 18 — is the primary cause of cervical cancer. Regular HPV screening is a critical component of women's preventive healthcare, as it can detect high-risk strains years before any cellular changes develop. This test involves a brief internal examination during which a clinician collects a cervical swab sample. The sample is analysed for the presence of high-risk HPV strains by the Reinier Haga MDC laboratory. Results are typically available within a few business days. A positive result indicates the presence of high-risk HPV but does not mean cancer is present — it signals a need for monitoring and potentially a PAP smear to assess whether any cellular changes have occurred. The test is available to women of all ages, unlike the Dutch national screening programme (bevolkingsonderzoek) which invites women from age 30. It is particularly relevant for women who are between screening intervals, who have been referred by a GP for early monitoring, or who prefer private screening with faster results. The test can be combined with a PAP smear at a reduced combined price for simultaneous HPV and cytological assessment.
