Lipase is an enzyme primarily produced by the pancreas, crucial for fat digestion. The test is often used to evaluate pancreatic disorders, especially acute pancreatitis, where inflammation causes lipase leakage into the bloodstream. Elevated lipase levels can indicate pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder issues, or other pancreas/bile duct problems. However, elevated levels can also stem from kidney disease, medications, or gastrointestinal conditions. Low levels are less common but may also indicate pancreatic issues.
