MRI of the Shoulder

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

30 min

A magnetic-resonance scan of the shoulder that images the rotator-cuff tendons, the labrum, joint cartilage and surrounding muscles in detail without radiation. It is commonly requested for shoulder pain, weakness or restricted movement, and after sports or overuse injuries. At OMEGA the study is performed on a 1.5 Tesla scanner, is non-contrast at the standard price, and usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. A specialist radiologist reviews the images and provides a written report, with faster turnaround available on request.

An MRI of the shoulder produces detailed, radiation-free images of the complex soft-tissue anatomy around the joint — the four rotator-cuff tendons, the cartilage rim known as the labrum, the joint surfaces, the biceps tendon and the surrounding muscles and bursae. This makes it the imaging of choice when shoulder pain, weakness, clicking or a limited range of movement persists, particularly after a sports injury, a fall or repetitive overhead activity, and when an X-ray alone has not explained the problem. At OMEGA the examination uses a new-generation General Electric Signa Creator 1.5 Tesla system. You lie on the scanner table with the shoulder positioned in or beside a dedicated coil and the arm supported so it stays still, because movement degrades the fine detail; ear protection is provided for the noise of the sequences. A single-shoulder study generally takes around 20 to 30 minutes. The standard 700 zł price is for a non-contrast scan, which answers most rotator-cuff and degenerative questions. In selected cases — for instance, detailed assessment of the labrum — an MR arthrogram with contrast may be advised; this is priced separately and arranged on the radiologist's recommendation. The centre provides self-pay imaging with transparent fixed prices and short waits, and private appointments require no referral. After the scan a specialist radiologist interprets the images and prepares a written report, usually within a few working days, with images supplied on CD and an optional expedited 48-hour report for an additional fee.
