MRI of the Knee

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

30 min

A magnetic-resonance scan of the knee joint that images the cartilage, menisci, cruciate and collateral ligaments, tendons and bone surfaces in detail without radiation. It is one of the most common sports and orthopaedic studies, often requested after injury or for ongoing knee pain, swelling or instability. At OMEGA the scan is performed on a 1.5 Tesla system, is non-contrast at the standard price, and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. A specialist radiologist reviews the images and supplies a written report.

An MRI of the knee gives a detailed, radiation-free picture of the soft-tissue structures that an X-ray cannot show well — the menisci, the cruciate and collateral ligaments, the joint cartilage, the surrounding tendons and the bone marrow. Because of this it is a mainstay of sports and orthopaedic imaging and is frequently requested after a twisting injury, or when knee pain, swelling, locking or a feeling of instability continues and needs to be characterised before deciding on treatment. At OMEGA the examination is performed on a new-generation General Electric Signa Creator 1.5 Tesla scanner. You lie on the table with the knee positioned in a dedicated coil, and the leg is supported to keep it still, since movement blurs the fine detail that makes a knee MRI useful; you also wear ear protection for the noise. A single-knee study usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The standard 700 zł price covers a non-contrast scan, which is what most knee questions require. Contrast, or a specialised MR arthrogram, is only used in particular cases and would be priced separately and arranged on the radiologist's advice. The centre offers self-pay imaging with clear fixed prices and short waiting times, and you can book privately without a referral. After the scan a specialist radiologist reviews the images and prepares a written report, normally within a few working days, with the images provided on CD and an optional 48-hour expedited report for an extra fee. This is general information only and does not replace the advice of your own doctor or physiotherapist about whether the scan is appropriate for you.
