Cardiac CT, sometimes called Cardio-CT, uses a CT scanner with image acquisition synchronised to the heartbeat (ECG gating) to capture detailed, motion-controlled images of the heart and the coronary arteries that supply it. You lie on your back on the scanner table with ECG leads attached so the images can be timed to your heartbeat, and you will be asked to hold your breath for a short period while the heart is scanned. A cardiac CT almost always uses an intravenous iodinated contrast agent to show the coronary vessels, so a recent creatinine result may be requested beforehand, which the centre can arrange; a steady, slower heart rate helps image quality, and the team will give you the relevant preparation instructions. The appointment runs a little longer than a routine CT to allow for this set-up.
