You lie on your back on the scanner table with an intravenous cannula placed for the contrast injection, and you will be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds while the chest is scanned so the vessels appear sharp. The scanning itself takes only a few minutes, though the appointment allows time for the cannula and preparation. Because the study relies on iodinated contrast, a recent creatinine result may be requested beforehand, which the centre can arrange on site, and the team will check for relevant allergies. As CT uses ionising radiation, it is performed when the clinical benefit justifies it.
