Type
CT Scan
Duration
15 min
A computed-tomography scan of the abdomen that uses X-rays to produce fast, detailed cross-sectional images of the abdominal organs and surrounding structures. It is widely used as a broad assessment of the abdomen and to investigate a range of symptoms. At OMEGA the scan is performed on a 16-slice CT system and often uses intravenous contrast for full assessment. The scanning takes only a few minutes, after which a specialist radiologist reviews the images and provides a written report.
A CT scan of the abdomen uses a rotating X-ray system and computer processing to build detailed cross-sectional images of the abdominal organs — including the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and bowel — together with the surrounding vessels and tissues. Its speed and broad coverage make it a common general assessment of the abdomen, often used to investigate abdominal symptoms or to follow up something seen on another test; MRI is an alternative for certain questions and uses no radiation, and the radiologist can advise which suits a given situation. At OMEGA the examination is performed on a Hitachi Eclos 16-slice CT system. You lie on your back on the table, which moves smoothly through the ring-shaped scanner, and you may be asked to hold your breath briefly during the scan to reduce motion. The scanning itself takes only a few minutes. Abdominal CT frequently uses an intravenous iodinated contrast agent to show the organs and blood vessels clearly, so a recent creatinine result may be requested beforehand, which the centre can arrange on site; you may also be asked not to eat for a few hours before a contrast study. Because CT uses ionising radiation, it is performed when the clinical benefit justifies it. The published 490 zł price is for the self-pay abdominal CT with transparent fixed pricing; contrast is charged separately when used. Private bookings require no referral and waiting times are short. After the scan a specialist radiologist interprets the images and prepares a written report, usually within a few working days, with images supplied on CD and an optional expedited 24-hour report for an additional fee. This is general information only and does not replace advice from your own physician about whether the examination is appropriate for you.
