The test works by analysing cell-free DNA circulating in the bloodstream — specifically looking for methylation patterns that are characteristic of cancer cells rather than normal tissue. Many of the cancer types detectable by Galleri lack conventional screening methods. While mammography screens for breast cancer, colonoscopy for colorectal cancer, and PSA for prostate cancer, the majority of cancer types have no recommended routine screening test.
