Type
MRI Scan
Duration
30 min
MRI of a single hip joint assessing the labrum, articular cartilage, femoral head, acetabulum, and surrounding soft tissues. No contrast required.
The hip MRI protocol at NewMedical covers the acetabulum, femoral head, labrum, and periarticular soft tissues using coronal, sagittal, and axial sequences. The examination is particularly useful for detecting labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement morphology, early avascular necrosis of the femoral head, stress fractures, and occult hip fractures not visible on X-ray. The radiologist evaluates the acetabular labrum for tears and paralabral cysts, articular cartilage integrity, subchondral bone signal, and the surrounding tendons including the gluteal insertions and hamstring origins. Joint effusion and synovial pathology are documented. This scan is commonly requested for persistent groin or hip pain without a clear X-ray diagnosis, in younger athletes with suspected labral tears or impingement, and for staging or monitoring of avascular necrosis.
